Understanding Your Ayurvedic Constitution

There are five basic elements: Air, Ether, Fire, Water, and Earth in which manifest in the human body as three basic principles known as the Tridosha.  The three Doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Vata represents Air and Ether

Pitta represents Fire and Water

Kapha represents Water and Earth

These three elements, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, -govern all the biological, psychological, and physio-pathological functions of the body, mind, and consciousness.  They act as basic constituents and protective barriers for the body in its normal physiological condition. When out of balance, they contribute to the disease process.  The tridosha are responsible for the arising of natural urges and individual preferences in foods such as flavors, temperatures, and so on.  They govern the creation, maintenance and destruction of bodily tissue, as well as the elimination of bodily waste.  The tridosha are also responsible for psychological phenomena including the emotions of fear, anger, greed, and for the highest order of human emotions such as love, compassion, and understanding. The three doshas are the foundation of the psychosomatic existence of man.

Prakruti:  Is the natural constitution of the individual.  The nature and tendencies you were born with. (We see Prakriti as the “birth” condition).

Vikruti:   Is the disturbance of the natural constitution that is most often due to a lifelong process of habits and lifestyle practices that are in opposition to our unique nature.  It is our current state of living with environmental stressors that affect our health and wellbeing.  Vikruti is the “end result” of living out of harmony with our true nature and is seen as our “life” condition. -the end result of our reactions to life experiences.

Your natural constitution (Prakriti) never changes, it is your birth imprint. Your (Vikruti) does change according to your life condition and experience.
